In May, we introduced the
DeviantArt Timeline as a method of communicating with deviants and providing transparency about what’s planned for our collective future. During the site simplification process that followed, we received a number of comments from deviants asking why we were working on the features presented on the Timeline instead of other things. Many of the features brought up in these comments are ones that have been requested for years. We want to be more transparent about these suggested features, why some of them haven’t happened yet, and why some of them may never happen.

These requests are from past Site Updates, the Suggestions Forum, surveys, and individual requests we’ve received.

Notes in the DeviantArt Mobile App

When we launched the DeviantArt Mobile App, we made the difficult decision not to include Notes in the first version.  We wanted the app to be in your hands as soon as possible, and rather than postponing its release for Notes to be completed, we went ahead with launch.  But, the wait is nearly over! Notes will be in the DeviantArt Mobile App by October.

Group Deviations Separated in Notifications

Deviants often ask to have group deviation notifications split from regular deviation notifications. It’s great to get topical deviations in your notifications; however, active groups can often be overpowering. We’re happy to let you know that this change will be happening very soon.

Viewing Results of Your Poll Without Having To Vote on it Yourself

While this is a very specific request, being able to view results on your own poll without voting is a suggestion we get constantly, and we're working on implementing this change shortly!

Deviant Search

Admittedly, we should have implemented this long ago, but our aim is to make it happen sooner-than-later. The first version of deviant search will be fairly simple, allowing you to search for a specific deviant by their username or part of their username. Later on, we want to make a more robust search, allowing you to find deviants in a variety of different ways — including by artist type, genre, skill level, age, location, and more.  (We recently wrote a journal asking how you find other deviants.  Share your feedback!)  We'll have more details on the target dates of all search-related features within the next few weeks.

Favourites Search

The ability to search in favourites has been a long-standing community request that we’ve addressed in various Site Updates.  As mentioned, we haven't implemented this feature previously due to the technical work involved.  However, we want to enable this functionality and plan on making the technical changes needed soon.  We'll have more details on the target dates of all search-related features within the next few weeks.

Notes Search

The ability to search in notes is among our top community-requested features. We’re committed to adding search to Notes, and our goal is to do this by October; however, we acknowledge that October timeline is a stretch goal and the project may take longer.  We'll have more details on the target dates of all search-related features within the next few weeks.

Notes Uplift

The desire for an uplift to Notes is commonly mentioned in several community-feedback surveys we've held.  We want to redesign Notes to make it more modern, user-friendly, include a great search, and work better on mobile.  This new version of Notes would group notes between you and another deviant into one thread, allowing you to easily find notes you've previously sent or received from that deviant, easing inbox manageability when you have a long conversation with that deviant. (Currently, that conversation would end up scattered between conversations with other deviants).

Collaborative Deviations (Labeling Collaborators on a Deviation)

When deviants work together to create one piece of art, it can become complicated to share that art on DeviantArt. Often, both deviants will submit the same deviation and mention the other artist in the description, but that can lead to comments and favorites on both deviations going unseen by the deviant-creators. While we want to address this, there are a lot of complexities involved. We are still thinking about ways we can provide a better system for collaborators.

Private Favourite Folders

While we acknowledge that some deviants want to be able to make their favourites folders private, we haven't seen a strong community interest in having this as an option.  As such, we don't have any immediate plans to add it as a feature.

Indication on Thumbnails if Deviations are Already in Your Favourites

Deviants have suggested they would benefit from an indication of some kind on thumbnails that made it clear that deviation was already added to their favourites. We agree that this is a great idea, and we'd like to do it for Daily Deviations as well. Having said that, we don't currently have a timeframe for these changes. Last week, we released a journal outlining our ideas for a new thumbnail grid, and we'll keep this suggestion in mind for future iterations.

Better Manage Deviations Page

We are very interested in better deviation management —  particularly how pro artists, or artists with a lot of deviations, can better manage their deviations. As it stands, the experience isn’t ideal; however, we don’t consider this as high a priority as other initiatives and don’t have any timeframes around deviation management.

View Recently Deleted Notifications

Sometimes deviants accidentally delete notifications and want a way to view items they’ve recently removed. Notifications, Watch, and Feedback are features we’re actively working on, and they will begin to dramatically change shape later this year. The idea of “read” vs. “unread” is something we’ll be exploring and will hopefully alleviate these issues, but this will likely not be happening in the coming months.

See Who Purchased Your Premium Content

Deviants who sell Premium Content have requested to see who is buying their digital downloads. We think this is a good idea (if the buyer chooses to share such information), and we’d like to provide deviants with more tools to run their DeviantArt businesses. We want DeviantArt to be a dashboard for your art on the Internet that connects you with your audience and customers. However, we're still mapping the requirements needed to make that happen. Because of this, we don't have a specific timeframe for these changes.

Favourites Subfolders

Subfolders within favourites is a common request from the community; however, we feel that it’s in the community’s best interest to solve this problem in other ways. One problem with favourites folders is that they currently don’t scale well. Having too many favourites will cause your favourites page to become overwhelming and make finding that folder more difficult.

The use of favourite folders is important to DeviantArt as a whole. It makes More Like This more accurate and provides a great experience to discover new art around a topic. Our goal is to make favourites simpler and easier to use rather than adding more complexities.

Multi-image Deviations

Multi-image deviations aren't currently slated on our Timeline. There are workarounds to include multiple images in one deviation — such as including multiple images in one larger file, or including them in a journal — and while we acknowledge that these methods aren't ideal, we don't see enough demand for this as a feature to prioritize it over other features that are wanted or need to happen.

Exclusion Filtering by Tag

We've seen requests from deviants asking for a blacklist feature that could remove deviations with certain tags from the browsing experience. (For example, if you don't want to see deviations tagged #spider, you could add that tag to your blacklist.)  We don't have any plans for a feature like this currently, but we're not opposed to the idea of personalization based on interests. Right now, we're investigating content strategy as a whole — how we decide what displays where — and we're looking into this with the knowledge that this is a feature some deviants might want.  Tip: If you want to do this in individual browse or search results, you can always add a minus sign before the tag (example: "insects -#spider").

Please Note

As you may have seen on the DeviantArt Timeline, today's announcement was originally slated for DeviantArt Shoes.  However, based on the community feedback we've received over the last few weeks, we felt it was more important to address the topic of community feature requests at this time.

The DeviantArt Shoes announcement has been merged with the Deviousness Revamp announcement, and the combined journal is now scheduled for release on Wednesday, June 17th. The Design Checkpoint journal has been temporarily removed, to be re-added at a later date.

By next week, we'll have added the next handful of release dates to our Timeline!

Stay Connected

Keep an eye on the DeviantArt Timeline for news and notes about when these projects will hit the site!  Do you have more requests for projects or features that aren’t included here?  Share them in the comments, or check if they’re listed in the Suggestions Forum.

In May, we introduced the DeviantArt Timeline as a method of communicating with deviants and providing transparency about what's planned for our collective future.  Today, we're addressing community-suggested features — some upcoming, why some haven’t happened yet, and why some may never happen.

So dA is not planning on giving us control over who can see our activity here (like private favorites folder). Do they realize that it's a very basic and one of the most important features a site like this can have? If dA was owned by Google or Facebook, they'd be getting sued every minute from the average Joe to governments all around the world. Privacy is a right for every person so they either acknowledge that any site usage of people here will always be public so they should leave if they want some privacy and include this explicitly in their Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and EULA, or they have to fix it.
And no, this site is not anonim even if you try to use it like that, there are a multitude of ways to link profiles here to a real person, you don't have to provide any personal information; your browser, your ISP, the servers the traffic goes trough will do it for you. It taxes effort to really hide yourself. And of course that's not an option to us who want to be present as ourselves. But having the ability to control what's public on your user profile can save you from a lot of trouble, e.g. not getting a job. Personally I don't care if people see that for example I have a lot of mature content saved as favorite, I acknowledge what kind of art I like, but we don't live in a world where that can't have serious negative effects on many people in certain situations.
And yes, I personally am going to leave if there will be no solution, I won't support a site, not even by being registered, which doesn't have a 21st century privacy policy.

Hi :)
Didn't the possibility to see recently faved/commented submissions (not just from the people you watch, but eveyone on dA) get removed with the Today page overhaul? I really miss this option :( I was able to discover a lot of artwork I had otherwise never found through it. Are there any plans to reincorporate it back in the current design? That would be great :)

Exclusion Filtering by Tag, please!!! There are a lot of things I come across while browsing that I really wish I didn't have to see. Using the Mature Content filter doesn't help, because the people uploading these things don't mark their work like they're supposed to! Please put Exclusion Filtering into serious consideration, it would make many of us very happy!

Exclusion Filtering by Tag - yes please. Who would remember all the no-no tags and type them all in every single search?

BTW please allow us to blacklist chosen tags, authors or particular deviations from appearing in 'more like this' for our own deviations... It's overly stupid and irritating to see e.g. 'hate/anti stamps' in more like this for 'for stamps' on the same subject matter... e.g. 'I'm straight but I support gay right' having 'All gays are sinners' in 'more like this, or 'I hate Christians' having 'I love Jesus'... or a cute chibi drawing having very sexual image in MLT. It only provokes arguments as well as ruins the feeling of the main deviation... or you're against X and you're getting X in MLT for a very personal image of yours. Or you're enemies with some deviant and their deviations are featured on YOUR deviation's page. Really, there is a need for at least some control to MLT results for our own deviations...

Indication on Thumbnails if Deviations are Already in Your Favourites - a nice timesaver and reminder. Sometimes one forgets they didn't fave sth and in some cases it can mean trouble (e.g. if you don't fav an art gift or request it can be insulting to the artist, and it's easy to forget to press that button or to close the tab before the process of faving is finished).

Multi-image Deviations - alternatively, multi-version deviations would be very useful. Like you just click somewhere within the deviation and you get another version visible. e.g. ver1 a SFW reference sheet ver2 a NSFW reference sheet (meaning that the versions should have separate ratings possible); alternative bg versions, alternative colour versions, or, in case of collabs, final version + X's part + Y's part etc., or WIPs... Everything in one place, with the same stats, without loads of separate deviations of basically the same thing just somehow altered... And for comics. One image would be like the main and always showing first and on top, the rest would be kind of hidden behind it. Ofc there should be some easy to spot sign that would scream 'this deviation has more images behind it!' E.g. the miniature would look like a stack in stash. BTW perhaps you could make use of sta.sh mechanics to some extend? + fav a stack possibility?
e.g. the active image/version like a regular deviation and a menu right below it with very little previews and maybe possible sub titles(optional to make, e.g. very useful for comic pages) and arrows 'previous' and 'next'?

You're working on Notes(omg, I so much need to be able to get all correspndence with a chosen person or on a chosen topic) and Collabs so no comment needed:P

Also new idea just from me, like many deviants I watch artist from a wide range of disciplines/categories; is there a way I can have the art from people I'm watching pushed to a certain favorites folder.  That way all my realist painters, photo artist, etc, can all be in their own place, and I can just remove what I don't like later.
Because I can't keep track of who does what with just the names, and the friends tab kind of sucks because I can't see everyone and there's no user icons, idk maybe that's just a mobile problem.

I already left this somewhere else but I see now it should be here you can just ignore the other one, hope you don't find all this reposting annoying.

Anyway I would like to request on my, and the behalf of all other interested parties, that you all add a batch process feature to the submission menu.

Ideally this feature would allow us to use the features already in the menu to affect multiple deviations, one's already in our gallery or being submitted. I believe it should look/act somewhat like a photo editing program, where we can select the feature or features we wish to apply and scroll through thumbnails of our gallery/desktop checking which deviations or deviant folder we want to be affected.

A good interface example IMO is the photo editor Digital Photo Professional.

I think that depending on the feature used their may need to be two different menus. One for blanket features that don't require extra input, (watermarking) that could be applied all at once instead of scrolling through selected images and applying.

For features that require added input it is best to select a group of images to apply the feature to and flip through them adding specificities then at the end start the process.

Can there be the option to not receive certain types of notifications? I'd rather not delete each notification individually when someone goes through and faves 50+ things in my gallery. And it happens often. It's happened at least twice this month. It's tedious to remove the faves (mostly because these types don't stack like multiple users faving one picture) and I should be able to unsubscribe from certain types of notifications, whether it be favorites or watchers or whatever.

Multi-image Deviations is something I'd personally love to see. Some Projects just require several images to be properly presented, like Fotos of Physical crafts from several angles, a resource galleries of similar topics in different perspectives or poses, concept arts of several characters or items that belong to the same project but should receive their own space to shine.
Yes, you can sort them in Folders in your gallery, but all the cascading is a rather unnecessary workaround, as is compiling all the pictures in one deviation and could easily be fixed with something like a pocket which contains all these images.
I'd strongly encourage making this happen.

"Private Favourite Folders
While we acknowledge that some deviants want to be able to make their favourites folders private, we haven't seen a strong community interest in having this as an option.  As such, we don't have any immediate plans to add it as a feature."

This has probably been said before, but I want to put my 2 cents in just to be sure.  All I can think of is people using this to collect wank material.  I specifically check who favs certain deviations of mine to remove myself from these types of collections, and I really don't like the idea that someone could hide that they're doing it on DA.  They can go to the effort of downloading and saving files to their computer if they're so desperate to hide what they're faving...You're not completely saying no to implementing it, so I wanted to put in my strong "AH! PLEASE NO" opinion to consider

About the whole thing: I can't believe I missed this announcement, where have I been??  This is all very exciting ^^  Deviant search sounds like it's going to be great once you do all you want with it!  I've been needing a basic deviant search since EVER because I suck at remembering people's full usernames, so even the first bit will be very very helpful!  Searching by real name (or at least what they have listed as their real name in the About section) would be helpful too if you can do that somehow.

Seeing who purchased your PC is something I would absolutely love to see happen.  Being a stock provider, it's helpful if I know who has paid for my stock, since that is oftentimes the only way they should be able to have access to it; it'll help me verify if the stock use is legitimate.  And it's just cool to see who bought your stuff so you can go give them love!  I'd like to give repeat buyers some special treatment like free images or something...endless possibilities to utilize that feature!

Sorry to pop in after like a month, but how would you sort out what accounts were actually dead from the start and what accounts were simply people who'd left for years, maybe popular people or known people at least who left, then you take their username, and people could confuse you for them.

Does my point make any sense? lol
basically I'm saying is it's just useless, and there are ways around usernames, like I wanted my current username to be lesbi but that was taken so I changed l to a capital i and it looks just the same

Hello, i was only talking about accounts that have 0 Comments / 0 Favs / 0 Watchers / 0 Deviations / 0 activity whatever since years. No profile pic, not even any text written on their profile, completely empty. It's like they never even logged in or activated their accounts with their email.

I'm pretty sure those kind of people are not the popular type, and they won't come back after 4 5 7 years out of nowhere. If you browse through random deviants you can find quite a few of them.

I am rather pet-peeved over the decision with the sub-folders for the favorites. Really, a lot of people wish for this to happen so our favorite collections aren't so cluttered. I've been trying to organize my favorites for a long time, especially when it comes to organizing MMD resources that are for anyone to download and use.

For starters, no one I think knows what 'don't scale well' means unless they are a computer technitian. And secondly, how would it make it hard to find? It's not too hard to read and scan to look for it. Not to mention it may make the 'more like' option more accurate and actually do what it's supposed to do.

Not to mention no one even proposed a 'different way to solve the problem', so why tell everyone here that '
we feel that it’s in the best interest to solve this problem in other ways'? How else would there even be a way to solve the problem?

You don't need to be a technician to grasp what "scaling" implies: simply put, even with subfolders, the more you get, the more of a convoluted mess it still ends up becoming - as opposed to becoming something easier to manage. A tree-like structure only helps so much before it becomes a burden, too. At the very least, the mobile experience in this regard would be pretty terrible, that's for sure.

That is why they're exploring alternatives, rather than jumping the gun and giving you something that may still end up epically failing. Just because everybody's asking for subfolders doesn't make that the smart thing to do.

I don't see how folders can be hard to find. Just divide the space into two parts, folders on the left and deviations on the right.

Although I would say a better solution would be to replace all folders with the same system used for stash. Deviations can be placed in stacks, stacks are arranged in a grid, and maybe also arrange deviations into a separate grid below or to the right of the stacks grid to keep them separate.

Wherever you choose to place the stacks on the page it won't scale well to many stacks but that would only be a rare case if deviants sort their favourites correctly.

I was kinda saddened when read about Favourites Subfolders :-( That was really my dream on deviantart. I didn't really understand a point with folder scaling (What do you mean :o? I lack either English or Web-Design skills to understand this), but I think subfolders would really do "More Like This" feature more accurate: like, results for a photo of a cat lying in Photography folder are less accurate than for one in Photography->Cats subfolder.
And then I can't understand why subfolders in Gallery are ok and in Favourites - not.
And finally, I would agree to have this feature only in Premium Membership.
Sorry if my comment sounds like I don't want to understand your point :-D

So you think that making thumbnails smaller or something is going to help "unclutter" someone's favourites?
Tell that to the 19,721 favourites I have in my mine, eh?

I'm sure it wouldnt be that hard to copy and paste the line of code from gallery subfolders into favourites subfolders, right? With of course a few modifications here and there.
