The DeviantArt Timeline entries from the past few months have discussed how we’re focusing on user experience for DeviantArt and ways to make the site more intuitive. In this journal, we'd like to kick off a discussion on another big design-related milestone: to improve the profile experience on the site, mobile web, and mobile apps.

A lot has changed since the last time profiles were redesigned, and we have a number of interesting design challenges and objectives this time around.

At the forefront of our minds is the presentation on mobile Web, alignment with our mobile app, and a new layer of customization so deviants can make the experience feel more distinctive to their own personality and art. The recurring topic that's surfaced during the process is the need for simplicity.

This journal includes concept designs that represent avenues we're exploring. These are works-in-progress and not final.

Question 01

How could the DeviantArt profile serve your needs better?

02

We have a significant amount of mobile traffic coming to our site every day from various smart-devices. We also have our own mobile app that's seeing a ton of growth. With the momentum towards mobile continuing on the rise, our goal is to ensure your profile will render perfectly at different sizes, establish optimized page performance, and most importantly, keep your deviations looking beautiful.

A

Your profile is viewed across a variety of screen sizes. A smaller or larger screen will have an impact on how your content is presented.

B

The transition of a busy desktop page to mobile web will change the order of how the content is presented and how quickly it loads. Many people choose a simpler layout with less content so it works effectively across all screen sizes.

Question 02

Do you consider how your profile is being viewed on mobile when adding content and widgets to your profile?

03

So what would an artist from the world’s largest art community do with a personal image on their profile? Is this the moment your personal brand has been waiting for?

There’s a lot happening on our current profile pages: widgets, galleries, and comments. We want to start the profile redesign with a couple of new enhancements that allow you to personalize your page even more.

Below are examples of how we’re integrating a customizable art canvas that you can add with one of your latest deviations, or create a new piece of art that can be easily added.

A

:iconlynnchenart: LynnChenArt

We had fun working with this profile. Lynn made it easy for us with such a fantastic deviation to feature as her art canvas. We’ll discuss the new navigation idea further down the page.

View Profile

B

:iconzilla774: zilla774

zilla774 has been leading up these design ideas for profile and couldn't wait to add his own canvas art. This approach includes a few additional data points by the profile name in the art canvas.

View Profile

C

:icongriffsnuff: griffsnuff

The row of information on the art canvas image with the age, badges and watch button allows for a simpler navigation bar and cleaner UI overall.

View Profile

D

:iconpicolo-kun: Picolo-kun

We’re excited to see what kind of doodle Gabriel will sketch for his art canvas. The overlay on the art canvas allows us to add information to the top of the page which makes for a cleaner page.

View Profile

E

:iconpetemohrbacher: PeteMohrbacher

A taller art canvas image allows for some data points (watchers, views, etc.) to be placed on the canvas art image. We have some nice transition ideas planned for when you scroll up the page.

View Profile

F

:iconartgerm: Artgerm

This example moves the art canvas image above the profile navigation and keeps it free of user information.

View Profile

G

:iconagawaer: Agawaer

An example of a visual art free profile that has a focus on Literature or other written art forms. The art canvas is presented here is a stock option for Deviants who don’t have anything else to use.

View Profile
Question 3.1

How would you take advantage of the art canvas, and how often would you change it?

Focus on the canvas art area only - you can see how the canvas art image has scaled down to work on a mobile screen.

This is the same profile screen but at a desktop+ scale. We believe scaling up from a normal desktop size is also something we need to consider. At its largest size (big monitors) we increase the size and lock the placement of the art canvas on the left, and the content to the right scrolls. The art canvas can be filled with your latest deviations or something unique that you create specifically for this.

Some of the examples above presented the profile without a global header bar. The below animation speaks to how we’re thinking of handling it. The result is that your cover art image aligns to the top of the page, and your own personal brand is the dominant art that fans will first see.

Question 3.2

What data points and information are important to present on the profile page?

04

We’re also exploring the idea of allowing people even further personalization options with the ability to select from one of three color options (black, grey and white) for the background color of the page. This feature combined with the canvas art image should allow you to make the page feel unique and distinctive.

Color Option:

Grey

Color Option:

Dark Grey

Question 04

Would you use the option to select a background color to align with your art canvas image?

05

You’ve seen a couple of different approaches to the navigation design in profile. This is an important topic when considering mobile web, because it not only needs to be intuitive, but also needs to work across different screen sizes.

Profile Navigation

Profile Navigation

The goal of this exploration is to simplify the navigation and develop new ideas for deviants to get support from fans.

Deviations

  • Galleries Your deviation submissions grouped by gallery name

  • Favourities All of your favs grouped by collection name.

  • Work in Progress A place to post your daily sketches (versus finished deviations) with an improved 2-click submit.

Posts

  • Journals Your journal posts.

  • Polls Your polls.

  • Status Your status.

Support Me

  • Support Highlighting your deviations and activity that need support from the community.

  • Prints The deviations you have for sale as a print.

  • Commissions When you create a commission (via widget) for your fans to buy.

  • Donate Points, Give Premium Membership Other ways the community can support you.

Question 05

Do you like the simpler way of organizing your profile?

06

The most important section in a deviants profile is the gallery, and we’ve been looking at ways to improve the experience.

Below is a new style of navigation, the new thumbnail grid that we presented recently, and a different way to navigate to a specific gallery. We’re also looking at ways to include a featured deviation (the large deviation) at the top of the page.

Question 06

How else can we improve how galleries work today? Would you use the featured deviation option in each gallery?

The DeviantArt Timeline entries from the past few months have discussed how we’re focusing on user experience for DeviantArt and ways to make the site more intuitive. In this journal, we'd like to kick off a discussion on another big design-related milestone: to improve the profile experience on the site, mobile web, and mobile apps.

So um...Why hasn't this happened yet for PC users?
I feel that people shouldn't have to pay for a PM just to have this sort of feature on their profile.
Besides you guys make how much money a year or a month alone?...

I would use DA more if they had this sort of feature implemented for everyone to use.
On top of that: When will you guys implement "real money" widgets for PayPal users?
Is it really that hard to add a PayPal widget for PM & Non-PM users? I can see why DA doesn't get a lot of love like it used too.
I'm done with DA anyways...

With some changes to the existing widgets and zones, or at least an option to change the layout, we all would have so many new possibilities to create truly fantastic profiles.
Small Layout Change by Mock1ngb1rd
An easier way to insert a background picture for the widgets and so on would also be fantastic.

Since even this is too much/not possible I don't believe in such large changes.
But I really hope you convince me of the opposite.

Best regards

How could the DeviantArt profile serve your needs better?
It's good right now. However, the website right now is starting to feel very lunchboxy if that means anything. I'm really loving the mock-ups you guys are coming up with. I'm always open to new things.

Do you consider how your profile is being viewed on mobile when adding content and widgets to your profile?
I don't consider it much as long as it works, fits, and is easy to navigate, which it is for the most part. However, the difference in appearance between the mobile view and the app feels odd, like DA doesn't know what it wants to look like. Lately, I'm favouring the mobile view more, especially if it will end up looking like your new mock-ups.

How would you take advantage of the art canvas, and how often would you change it? What data points and information are important to present on the profile page?
Art canvas as in the profile's "hero image"? I would definitely use it, and change it as often as I feel like. I think the current amount of data points and information is okay. Any more and the profile might look like a page for statistics rather than art. What you have on the mock-up is good. Keep all of the specifics initially hidden.

Would you use the option to select a background color to align with your art canvas image?
Yes! I'm open to any kind of profile customization. I might go with the dark grey.

Do you like the simpler way of organizing your profile?
Simple is good. But the modular design needs to stay. It enables us to arrange our profiles the way we would like our viewers to see it.

How else can we improve how galleries work today? Would you use the featured deviation option in each gallery?
I would definitely use the featured deviation in almost every gallery. Definitely take advantage of responsive layouts for wide browser viewing. In the last gallery mock-up, I like how each row has its own focus. However if the browser is too wide, I would rather have a sidebar with either the mini showcase of galleries and/or custom modules than a super blown up featured deviation and too many deviations at a glance. Or perhaps relative side margins for breathing room instead, giving a less-crowded look to the gallery and more focus to the art. Not sure which is better in this case: use up as much space available for other stuff, or giving up that something else for the art. I think I'm leaning towards the latter.

  1. How could the DeviantArt profile serve your needs better? It's fine now- for core members. I don't like how not having core doesn't let you customize your profile to the fullest extent. I understand other core privileges, but I don't like that one.

  2. Do you consider how your profile is being viewed on mobile when adding content and widgets to your profile? I don't, so I probably should. I feel like more people use desktop than mobile

  3. How would you take advantage of the art canvas, and how often would you change it? What data points and information are important to present on the profile page? I would for sure use it, and maybe change it once in a while. I'd use one of my favorite art pieces on it

  4. Would you use the option to select a background color to align with your art canvas image? I kinda like the dark grey one, so I might use it

  5. Do you like the simpler way of organizing your profile? I do. I like that idea much better.

For me, Fixing the 403 Forbidden Error is more important than redesign by these profile... Sometimes (or more often), i can't access deviantart.com... I have to refresh over times, or by adding "browse/all" directory after the domain... Sometimes, I can't even access my own pages. My galleries, Favorites. And sometimes so hard to Uploading an Art. Some of my Friends are migrating their art collection into Tumblr, because the tired face this problem... Maybe some command are successful, but annoying warning alert always follow... After upload an Art, there is a warning alert that the upload was error, and advice me to try again later. But after refreshing the page, content has uploaded...

I've consulting it in Deviant forum. Hope the team will fix it, because i love so much...

  1. How could the DeviantArt profile serve your needs better? - Honestly, things are pretty fine the way they are. Maybe some quick links to other art profiles in the deviant id. My only major request would be a commission widget like the ones on weasyl or FA that allow you to show your examples or prices with ease.

  2. How would you take advantage of the art canvas, and how often would you change it? What data points and information are important to present on the profile page?- Art canvas is honestly a dumb name, it sounds like an art program. I honestly wouldn't use it; if it's implemented, an option to disable it would be nice. It looks tacky to me. As for the second point, commission information and contacts.

  3. Would you use the option to select a background color to align with your art canvas image?- Yes, I currently use a dark grey stylish skin atm because it makes everything look nicer.

  4. Do you like the simpler way of organizing your profile? No, it looks overly complicated compared to the previous.

  5. How else can we improve how galleries work today? Would you use the featured deviation option in each gallery? Galleries are fine right now. I agree with another user's criticism that the overlay feature would discourage commenting and feedback. And no, I would not use the featured deviation for every gallery. Some of my galleries are strictly doodles and random things for fun. Not all contain serious works.

you guys should add something where the site will show you kinds of art you would be interested in, like the explore page in instagram. It would be really nice to come on here and see artists who share my interests and who are really great artists, rather than seeing weird recolors, photography that somebody took with an Iphone 4, and porn drawn on microsoft paint.

It's messy in my opinion and there are a lot of unnecessary thing like new deviations. I think deviantart need to focus more on the art it self. You need showcase more of the art from the user.

I really love the gallery layout option E ^^ I generally really love these changes, I'm excited to see them being implemented! One thing I would love to see is an option to integrate a Patreon link somewhere in the top header, similar to where you have the support button, to let people know that an artist is on Patreon and they can then easily find out where to support their favourite artists. I'm always on the lookout for new artists to support on Patreon, and I'd love a way to share my own Patreon easily too, so anyone who lands on my page can see that I'm on Patreon straight away :)

1). How could the DeviantArt profile serve your needs better?
On desktop, it's pretty good on it's own. I like having my page personalized. I like the idea of custom widgets. I like having two columns for my page. There are few few things I wish to change. 1) Widgets have a sharp corners instead of rounded corners. (for all deviants) 2) Ability to change the color of the background, not the widget background but the whole page (as a CORE member).
For Mobile-brower, I think dA should use the system Tumblr uses. Give deviants the option of having their page show up as a separate "Mobile theme" or force their "Desktop theme". The "Mobile Theme" would force one column view, a certain px size font, but still have widgets and able to customize with html/css. Everything customizable via that "Edit Page" button, clicking would open a drop-down list to edit mobile-layout or edit desktop-layout.
On the app, I'd like something like (C) except with one column. Have the widgets "tap-to-open" or cut from the first 20 lines with a "read more" to keep the page short and to the point.
I use my profile page as a big "About me" area.

2). Do you consider how your profile is being viewed on mobile when adding content and widgets to your profile?
No. The mobile-brower layout does not work. For many deviants, it's too long to scroll through their page. The app doesn't even show widgets.

3a). How would you take advantage of art canvas?
I would definitely use the background color feature. And I would definitely go in and make sure my page is readable on mobile, since many people are using mobile devices now days. However, I'm not sure if I will use the name "Art Canvas" as it is a mouthful and deviants are more used to saying "[My] Page"...

3b). How often would you change it?
Aside from the first few weeks of having "Art Canvas", I probably won't edit it massively. I'll probably do very minor edits as I see fit. (eg. adding/removing a stamp. fixing a typo. Changing my featured deviation.)

3c). What data points and information are important to present on the profile page?
(In roughly the order of importance.) Username, Contact info [real name/address/general location/other websites] Type-of-artist, Birthday, # of Pageviews, # of Deviations, how long they've been a member. I definitely love the usage of "Stamps" on dA. They're personal, they look good, and sometimes more telling than words about a deviant's character and tastes in art. I would love if there at the very least a "Stampbook" area.

4).Would you use the option to select a background color to align with your art canvas image?
Yes. Green does not go with everything. This is an artwebsite and artists should be able to control the color that frames their work!

5). Do you like the simpler way of organizing your profile?
Yes and no.
Everything in interface functionality makes me happy. It's modern. It looks good. Banners can be chosen from stock images.
Organization-wise, I like how staff is trying to make dA more accessible to people on mobile devices, but I feel like the way this is going will make dA impersonal. When I look at those preview images, It worries me that I don't see custom boxes, stamps, buttons, or interest. I don't just wanna see their newest art, or their collections. The way pages work is a deviantArt trademark. These ideas are crisp and professional-looking, but isn't there a deviantArt portfolio for those that are professionals?

6a). How else can we improve how galleries work today?
I hate the idea of deviation overlay. It's promoting people to shuffle through art more, rather than comment something.
I wish we could actually edit the whole gallery's CSS, rather than individual folders. Some people have +20 folders [And then subfolders!] and they have to open each one and copy and paste the code and it's tedious. It's just plain strange that we can't change the CSS on the "Featured" Folder.

When you click on a deviation to browse through a folder, I would like it if the "back" and "next" buttons didn't disappear when you refresh the page or write a comment.

6b) .Would you use the featured deviation option in each gallery?
One column featured art just feels awkward. It's too big and stretched out. It would require a big finished piece. If I can't put text beside/around it, I probably would never use it.

I hope that the designers won't get rid of widgets on profile pages. There's this culture on dA with buttons, stamps, and "how-to-html-for beginners", and I don't want that to change. It's a deviantArt trademark.

1.Ability to select[build] the sections already available; in the given journal selections for Section then Section Functionally to be enabled.

2.NO it is mostly a website issue. that could be implemented on the Section Functionally the "crop" and such on display.

3.Advantage?,guess would not change it often; Guess these data information are more related to premium users;
then on thinking of to trademark other products like Wacom,Corel Painter,GIMP or so;

4.Guess must keep the green color everybody are poisoned to. then sure would select colors.

5.yeah, very simple and the more presented functions;

6.Including Application Workflow to make desktop like an Phone App where things are sort of preloaded; Sure;

I absolutely love the Art Canvas idea, has been waiting for it since forever. My favourite example of it in this journal is of Griffsnuff's page, it looks really clean, and the information doesn't get in the way over the picture.

Also, the idea of changing the page color is A MUST. Please include it, that would be wonderful.

I can't wait for some design updates to be made, since dA's layout is quite outdated. But, whatever you do, please preserve the ability to code our pages, that's very important to a lot of us.

I feel as if many deviants are leaving this site and going on to simpler sites such as Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. And there are other art sites such as Behance and ArtStation that seem to be doing well. The accessibility and visuals of those sites are amazing and I feel it is quickly catching the attention of newcomers. The communities on those sites are great whereas DeviantArt is becoming quite poor. I don't want to have to be the next one to move on from DeviantArt but I really hope DeviantArt steps up its game and become the art site it needs to be. I feel like it's becoming the MySpace of this generation and everyone left to a better site.
