There was recently an incident on another website, completely unrelated to deviantART.com, that resulted in account email addresses and passwords for that site being leaked online. While the information was not deviantART-related, your deviantART account may be at risk if you use the same email address and password for multiple sites.

To protect your deviantART account, we strongly suggest that you change your password.

When updating a password, create one that is complex and unique, making it impossible for would-be intruders to identify it, whether by educated guess or calculated attack.

DeviantART strives to provide all our members with a safe and fun environment to grow and create. As part of our ongoing effort to keep your site experience protected, we're proactive when it comes to account security.

Don't you hate alarmists? Next time make sure my email and password is leaked before telling me it is. Or notify it properly by saying it MIGHT have been leaked.

No, there is a threat, but it is only a threat for those who use the same password everywhere, in other words, it's only a threat for those who are a threat to themselves.

"The email address associated with your account has been linked to an
offsite password breach"

How is this possible if no one knows my email? I mean you can't even use my domain name to set up emails yet someone breached it? lol

If you read the thing linked out, it was in association with the Adobe products breach that happened a short while back. If you have an adobe account of some kind, and it is registered under the same email, then they are letting you know that a breach occurred at Adobe and could possibly have compromised your email and login information.

Research. ;)

It says it in the post. If you had actually read the whole thing, you'd understand. Most people use the same email address for all their internet needs (which is fine, absolutely makes sense) but they also sometimes use the same password. So if you used the same email and password for an Adobe ID and password, then your deviantART credentials could be compromised. And THEN, it IS deviantART related.

I did read the entire note, but apparently you didn't - it SPECIFICALLY SAYS THIS IS UNRELATED TO DEVIANTART.

By your (and DeviantArt's) logic, Deviantart should forward ALL notices of ALL password breaches EVERYWHERE. Because, you know, people who recycle passwords probably do it all over the place.

At the VERY LEAST the banner that led to this notice should have said something like "important notice for Adobe users" or whatever.

Is it really so hard to engage one's brain?

The breach is unrelated to DeviantArt.

"Because, you know, people who recycle passwords probably do it all over the place."
-Yes, they probably do. Which means the staff is being courteous to them.

"important notice for Adobe users" or whatever.
-Which, this being a major art site, probably concerns a huge percentage of these members.

"Is it really so hard to engage one's brain?"
-What's with the attitude?

Adobe should have prevented this. I got an email from them and it gave some details of the attack. the attack took place on a backup destined to be deleted/removed/wipeout. It talked about old passwords and accounts potentially being at risk. The fact that old passwords could have been obtained is scary because these hackers can use them to help figure out your current password if that is possible. Thankfully I have been carefully of what I have put on my account, BUT that does not change the point which is Adobe Should Have Not Let This Happen PERIOD!!!!!!!

While for forums and other things I don't really give a crap about... I just use a random one from the past lol.

Dictionary attacks are the only way into most people's servers and databases. However flawed RTP's or even SSH's can easily be exploited into backdoor entries. The only thing we can do is make sure our passwords are different between different sites. or have different email accounts or both. (using multiple email accounts for validation and each having different passwords on different sites)

Limit sharing your authentication keys/passwords between multiple domains/servers/sites!!!!

Gosh this makes me so mad!!! Goddamnit Adobe, you should have this under control!
I'm really just upset because they have not said what kind of encryption they're using to encode user passwords. Then we can know what kind of shit we're really in here.

from what i can understand from adobe website, a group of hackers stole the encrypted password file to access certain parts of their system!!!
If the hackers have this file, all they have to due is run a dos program like TPU.exe or windows program like jack the ripper with a dictionary of common passwords or varations of passwords and they will have your id and password to login to your account like you do.
That is what happen at the sony website  for some online game center a few years ago.

when i was younger i use to crack unix password files and login using the cracked passwords!!!
One of the most common passwords back in the days was  PASSWORD, fuckyou, 123456, qwerty, letmein( let me in ), guys name, ladies name
