Encouraging New Deviant Engagement

Tue Jan 26, 2016, 12:13 PM by Heidi:iconheidi:

Receiving comments on your deviations can be one of the most rewarding aspects of DeviantArt. The moment you make the decision to share your art with the world, you're ready to connect with kindred spirits, hear their tips, and share feedback of your own.  The cycle is rewarding for each and every participant.

Untitled-1 by danlev

Starting today, we’re running a few experiments that aim to bring attention to new and undiscovered deviants on DeviantArt.  When such a deviant submits a deviation, he or she will be shown suggested deviations and prompted to leave a comment.  The purpose of this project is to create bonds between new deviants and help people find similar artists to grow with.

This feature is experimental, and we’re testing to see how something like this helps deviants grow as an artist and meet new people.

Regarding 4: A better algorithm for the groups directory where inactive groups (of several years) are not shown on the front page of search results - for starters.

People join groups for many reasons - to interact with others, give and get comments, etc. - and it doesn't do any good for the members or DeviantArt as a community if the groups are not active, but are still shown as the first results on the page. Rather than dividing the community between inactive groups, it makes more sense to unite members in an active group - that's what active groups are for.

Many articles posted through HQ this year have talked about community, interaction, deviant engagement, etc. yet we still seem to be blind to the fact that active groups pave the way for this. Active groups do everything that you describe in this journal, whether it's receiving comments on your deviations, connecting with kindred spirits, sharing feedback, bringing attention to new and undiscovered deviants, creating bonds between new deviants, helping people find similar artists to grow with, etc.

I guess it makes more sense that DeviantArt would rather shoot themselves in the foot.

I find most of the problems lie on artificial comments and critiques. I have recently decided to help someone with their project.. Before I  could even say anything 10 people were telling them how great it was. I reality i felt like i was in 2nd grade reading a fellow classmates book report. I can't be the mean one.. I dont mind being the mean one. If it help but I do not like being ganged up on.

Same, I don't like trying to help people and other artists are like: "You suck at drawing, you're not even half as good as this person, who are you to judge them?"
I'm like, dude, I'm trying to help.

Giving people prize to welcome deviants, even some points, will make everyone happy, the deviants we are saying welcome, and the person who is saying that.
and even make new friends. maybe we can know friends with this.
in the end, everyone is happy, make this again dA!!!

Never saw this prompt coming up.
I assume it works for new members only or a selected group of deviants?

First I have a question. How do you define "undiscovered"? I'm in a group that says it's "less than 500 views".
I haven't been prompted to comment on deviations. When I joined dA I also joined a newbie group. Now I'm a member of Unknown-Photography to discover new talents and be discovered. There are a lot of these unknown/new/beginner groups. I think groups are important in deviant engagement.
Also people tend to comment where there already are a lot of comments instead of being the first.

There's been a lot of changes and a lot of improvements. I couldn't exactly put my finger on what else there could be other than welcoming new arrivals and allowing them to discover on their own or with your guidance of what to share thoughtfully. The community has came a long way and it's been a great ride so far, as long as people do welcome, introduce and sponsor the atmosphere to these other arrivals, this would really keep things steady and at ease. :)

Seems like a very good idea to me, if it works
and today there was already someone who welcomed me so it seems to work, at least somewhat. But if I look through some profiles it seems quite random to me, when or how someone gets attention, but I like this step beeing taken.

Sorry but not that I just hate the idea, it's really unacceptable to force new deviant people to have this thing or act like an experiment. I stopped uploading stuff because I got random 20483403 deviations on my page and I had to click away every thing always. It won't create bonds between deviants , it will take away the sense of writing comments.

People shouldn't be forced in ANY way to look on other deviations and automatically showing them with every upload is kind of unwanted advertising. If a deviant is interested in a category , they will click on that specific category themselves. If they search for art, they have many possibilities to find some here, if they are planning to help new deviant people , then they can also write random comments on newest deviations.

And to do an experiment with not knowing new people here is really really rude. They even haven't been asked. I just went to deviantART and am part of secret experiments? That is a reason to leave that page.

There are much more problems on deviantart that should been solved instead of doing experiments like that-in my opinion. But still and mostly-if you plan to do "experiments" then you should ask for volunteers instead of including new members without knowledge secretly into any plan.

I found it amazing.

I'd like DA with a small list of the most recent deviants, that will be updated.
Also filter search by country, It would be great to find deviants of the country that you want :D
Of course, sort lists by last activity.

(Are only suggestions)

Well, I just received my first prompt and my thoughts would be that the system is really flawed. There needs to be a way to make sure the recommendations you are giving are legit. I love encouraging new members and young, budding artists...but two of the new accounts ( for a total of only 3 ) that were recommended to me were spammer accounts.

pamelareginald
Gtamortgage

I'm sorry, but I just cannot welcome these people who are only here to spam their offsite junk. ( in this case, mortgages and something about investing and currency...didn't read it all)  In fact, I usually report these kind of accounts but since this topic is on the table, I felt it was important for you to know who you are recommending for encouragement. I don't believe we should be encouraging these people since they are not here for the art community at all.

This is a very good add to dA. I've always wanted something like this to happen on this site. Its good for both the new people and the community as a whole! I think this will be a big help to get dA back to where it needs to be. I honestly feel very honored that I was one to be chosen to be apart of this and I will try my best to help out.
I do wish that I could get these type of things weekly or monthly though! I have a ton of free time and if I could sign up for something that could give me a new list every week, I would!

I only joined yesterday, but am really enjoying it.  I do think a big green bar is a little excessive, but I don't mind the small reminders to comment when I favorite.  I still favorite only much more than favorite and commenting, but I don't mind the reminder\suggestion.

I think it would be cool if there was a way to see other new Deviants and connect with them.  I've found a few already and I like trying to interact with artists who are brand new like me.  I think making it easy to see art by new members would be very cool.  It would make it easier for long time members to support new members and make it easier for new members to support each other.

I don't expect to get many comments as I am just starting out, but I've been really excited about the little bit of feedback I've gotten already.  I already feel very at home here.

I've been here for 2 weeks and it's been a lot of fun, but this prompt system is honestly a bit annoying. I comment on a lot of deviations (I make 16+ comments per day according to my stats) and go to forums sometimes and joined groups and shared my work. Like others have said, engaging with others by talking and sharing helps get you noticed (I have 20 watchers so I'm very happy :) )
But I only comment when I have time, someone requests critique (and I have something to say) or the piece is too good for me not to comment. I notice lots of people prefer to fav instead of comment because it's faster, too (more time to look at more stuff). But I try to be active everyday that I have time.
I do get a bit down that my stuff don't get a lot of comments, but they get favs and I'm happier knowing that people like my work enough to fav it. That motivated me to work on my art more too. Good art will get the attention it deserves one day, so I'm working on that, too.

What has really made the experience worth it all was others reaching out to me. Groups who feature new artists like All-about-features
helped my work get some more exposure, too. And it's very motivating too when you get these features as a new member.
The front page shows amazing works by well established, popular members. They are inspirational, but also intimidating. I also think a spot to feature new members would motivate them to be more active (even a little).
I also think a reward system as others have mentioned (rank or points or something) would really help a lot.

If they can find another less annoying way for this option then I see no harm. But right now having a stupid green drop box fill half my screen each time I submit something is really ruining my experience here on DA.  Groups are the best way to get exposure for one's work. Have a drop box list of submissions for you to comment on isn't going to increase comments.  If people are not commenting now forcing this onto them sure as hell won't encourage them any.
If people are complaining they are not getting enough comments on their work or not enough exposure, well then work for it. Join groups, network with other artists.  Get your work out there.  Just another example of the Entitlement generation wanting praise without having to actually work for it.

First of all, rather than featuring GOOD and already NOTICED artists on the front page, you instead could feature those whom get little to no attention at all.

I haven't been prompted so I couldn't say. if its a pop up or something I think its bad, if its something that takes a lot more processing speed to load like the login drop down menu for whatever reason I don't want it. if its like those advertisements that ty whole screen when I am browsing I don't like it.

otherwise I don't see a problem with it. though comments seem to be getting fewer and farther apart then ever before.

First of all, I have to bump/second :iconfuchsiastripes: Comment on here because it was great.

As with many problems, there's the part of the problem that's readily apparent, and then there's the root cause underneath that seldom is. I'm sure that deviantART should have enough resources to use data to actually figure out what the root causes are as far as deviants not commenting on art, and make adjustments based on that, rather than doing something like this. This feels like fixing a problem by simply hitting it with a hammer. :bonk:

It seems like every big website or firm has access to tons of information and methods for analyzing it, to optimize results, so I'm sure dA does too.

3 reading that some deviants are annoyed maybe make it optional: let interested deviants sign up to a pool where the prompted deviations are chosen from. if you are signed up you will get prompts. if not you won't get any but none of your deviations will be included in prompts. ( <-- idea needs some fine tuning! ^^)

  1. Have you been prompted to comment on deviations from fellow deviants?
  2. If so, what do you think about the experience?
  3. How could it be improved?
  4. Do you have other ideas for encouraging deviant engagement?

1. Yes
2. To be truthful it's very annoying
3. I think there should be a way to disable it. Or maybe not make it 7 pictures, it makes people who post a lot of art at once so spammed with pictures, I don't even bother looking at them
4. Maybe a reward system blank many comments will get you a point like every 5 comments you get a DA point. I know that DA can count your points already
