Changes to the Prints Agreement

As part of our continued effort to make deviantART the best place on the web to both display and sell your artwork, we are making some important improvements to our Premium Membership and Prints Program.

As a result of these changes, we've updated our Prints Agreement which can you can review in full here. To compare the new Prints Agreement with the former Prints Agreement, we've provided you with a helpful document that shows all of the language that has been removed, replaced, changed and added. Please see below.

I guess I'm confused about the new prints/premium account changes. I've had a premium prints account for about 5 years now, which puts me into the "until Hell freezes over" category. Will that make me a premium account member until that chilly day in Hades as well?
Also, when does this change take effect? My account still doesn't reflect this change.

Looks to me that I've been screwed here. I would buy my own prints occasionally for what seemed to be an affordable price, but was approaching the "Too Expensive" range. These new "reduced rates" have left me purchasing my own work for even MORE money. It looks as if I will be buying less prints due to this. Seeing how I'm the primary purchaser of my prints that results in less overall sells. Less sells for DA means less money for them. How was this an overall good idea that "combined [changes] in a way that benefits all, no matter what membership you previously held?"

You are correct that in your case, some (but not all) of these changes are not entirely positive.

However I ask that you please consider a few things...

1) The lowered shipping costs, even for US based users such as yourself, will help in significantly offsetting the relatively small base price increase.
2) For most users (Non-Print Account holders including Premium Members), these changes mean they are able to purchase their prints at a lower price than before. Everyone on the planet is now able to make a print purchase from a dA artist for less than before.
3) Although we feel we offer a product that is well worth the base prices we charge (which have not been adjusted in several years) if we see a drop in self-purchases as a result of these changes, we'll do our best to work out a solution. It's in our interest to make everyone happy. :)

I hope that in your case the lower print and shipping prices will bring you more sales and more prints profits so that you don't feel you're losing out.

Thanks for the feedback. Good or bad, it helps contribute to the overall goal of making dA prints the best place on the web to buy and sell prints.

I'm confused here also... In your announcement you say there are lower print prices? All I see is increased prices. I used to pay $3.90 for an 11x14... now the base price is $5.59. This is a major increase in price... and it appears that the shipping prices have also gone up... not down???

I used to pay $1.56 for first class shipping to most CO addresses... now it's up to $3.53

I am taking crazy pills, or are these all increases in prices? I thought your base prices for artists were pretty good before, but now they are much higher than some of the other places I work with. I appreciate the ease of use with the system for my drop shipped prints, but if these price increases are here to stay, I'm afraid I will take my business elsewhere...

Retail prices have gone down on prints. The price for other people to purchase your prints by default is lower and you now keep 100% of the markup.

Shipping should not have gone up, can you confirm that? Are you sure it was the same product you ordered?

I'm sorry if we lose your business because of the change in base prices, I can't say for sure that they will stay where they are or that we won't offer some kind of short/long term discounts so at least keep an eye on us.

Sure, I guess the pricing works out better for customers, but it's more expensive for the artist to buy his or her own work... this seems a little off to me. I primarily used DA to drop ship prints that were ordered through my own website.

And yes, shipping has indeed gone up for the same size print. For example, I just placed an order for an 11x14 print shipped to Denver, CO for $3.53. The same size print shipped to VA (for example), but if you look at my order history, you will see dozens of 11x14 prints shipped all over the country for only $1.56...

I just placed this one order to confirm that shipping had gone up, but I'm not sure I'll be ordering more in the future if the base prices and shipping do indeed stay at these increased prices...

Wish that wasn't the case, but that might just be what happens when you nearly double your prices on your customers (artists)...

Thanks for your time, I hope you'll re-consider these price increases.

Sincerely,

Phil Lewis

Hi Phil,

Shipping shouldn't have gone up at all, thank you for letting me know. I'll look into it properly.

We're getting a lot of feedback on the increased base prices, and we're listening carefully as we always do.

Thanks for pointing out the shipping charge, and for the constructive criticism.

Wait a minute... so if i am with Standart print account (not the premium) and i buy my own work i must pay the retail price. That's clear. But here it says that i'll get artist share. So If the base price is $15 and the retail is $40 I must pay $40 to get my own print. But then if i get artist share which is now 100% of the margin between the selling price and the base price, i must "earn" $25 which were mine to begin with. Does that mean that with Standart print account i can basically buy my own prints for the base price? The remaining $25 will still be mine and can be used to buy points or something?

No, the artist share is 100% only for the premium members. If you're with the standard print account the artist share is smaller. Which means that you'll "earn" less than $25.

Just a little observation: in the attached document, line 7 of the Service Fee section: shouldn't there be "before" instead of "as of"? Unless my English is failing at this hour :XD: From what I know, those who got a prints program before that date were to keep it forever no matter what.
