Sometimes you come across a deviation that deserves special attention. It catches your eye in such a way that you're compelled to craft a response that goes above and beyond a normal comment. Or perhaps a fellow deviant is having a tough time with a particular aspect of their work, and you know just what they need to take their art to the next level. As a good Internet citizen and art enthusiast, you want to help them out, but a normal comment doesn't quite suit your purpose.

For these situations and more, we've given everyone the ability to write a Critique.

What is Critique?

DeviantART's Critique system is designed to help artists get in-depth, critical feedback and commentary on their work. Valued feedback through Critique promotes creative growth as an artist and draws special attention to work. Critiques are also a way for committed art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and fans to publish real criticism, gain recognition as a critic, and introduce new and emerging art to the community.

Previously, only Premium Members could give Critiques, but we wanted to open up the opportunity to give meaningful feedback to all deviants. However, it remains true that only Premium Members can request Critiques on their work.

How do I use Critique?

When submitting a deviation, check the 'Request Critiques' option to enable Critiques on your work.

With this option checked, your watchers will be notified that you're looking for extra feedback. Your deviation will also appear in deviantART's Critiqueable page.

If you're looking for a work to Critique, browse the Critiqueable page for a piece that deserves expertise. You can also browse the Critiques page to view what other deviants have written and provide your own unique point of view.

Once you've found the deviation you want to Critique, hit the 'Write a Critique' button and start writing! Critiques must be at least 100 words. You can rate the deviation using a 5 star scale based on various criteria, like Vision, Originality, Technique, Impact, and Deviousness. When you're done, hit 'Send', and wait for the deviant to accept it!
